What is the BS 1710 standard?

With regards to PE Pipeline Specialists’ products, you may notice that they meet BS 1710 regulations… but what does this mean?

BS 1710 is the British Standard that applies to pipes and ducts, setting out clear guidance on labelling, colour coding and identifying the contents of pipework. Its primary purpose is to improve safety, reduce risk and ensure that anyone installing, operating or maintaining a system can easily understand what is flowing through a pipe at any given time.

Why was BS 1710 introduced?

The standard has become increasingly important as new regulations are placing greater emphasis on clear, durable pipe marking.

These regulations were introduced to improve safety across a wide range of environments by making users aware of pipe contents, even in complex or high-risk settings. BS 1710 provides a consistent framework that supports compliance with these requirements and helps organisations meet their legal and operational responsibilities.

BS 1710 is especially relevant for building designers and owners, service installers, and industries working with gas, liquid fuel, refrigeration, waste and water systems. In recent years, several updates to UK water industry regulations have reinforced the role of BS 1710 in plumbing and pipeline installations.

These changes are designed to eliminate cross contamination issues, protect public health and maintain the high quality of water supplies. By following BS 1710, installers can clearly identify pipe contents and flow, reducing the likelihood of costly or dangerous errors.
