BS 1710 provides guidance for the identification of pipes and ducts through the use of colour coding, labels and other forms of marking. It helps clearly communicate the contents and direction of flow within pipework, making systems easier and safer to understand. The standard is relevant across a range of applications, including water, gas, liquid fuel, refrigeration and waste systems.
BS 1710 itself is a British Standard rather than legislation, so it is not automatically mandatory in every situation. However, other regulations, legislation, specifications or project requirements may require pipework to be identified in accordance with BS 1710. Installers and building owners should therefore check which requirements apply to their particular system and application.
The current version of BS 1710 was published in 2014, replacing the previous 1984 edition. It provides updated guidance on the identification of pipework and ducting, reflecting changes in industry practice and safety requirements.
An unlabelled pipe should not be identified based solely on its appearance, location or assumptions about what it contains. Pipe contents should be confirmed using appropriate documentation, drawings or by a competent person before any work is carried out. Once the contents have been established, suitable identification and labelling can be applied in line with the relevant requirements of BS 1710. If there is any uncertainty, the pipe should be treated as unidentified until its contents have been safely confirmed.
